Man-Kyu Bok: The Man Who Read His Own Body Last

Man-Kyu Bok wrote Drawn First and Built in Reverse, and runs the five arenas of Bok Blueprint. He studied mechanical engineering and drew lines at a drafting table, then spent thirty years in the chair where people tell you the things they tell no one else. He read the grain of his own body at sixty-six.

I found out at sixty-six

My appendix is on the left.

I heard it for the first time on an operating table. It was not only the appendix. Several of my organs sat on the opposite side from most people’s.

For sixty-six years I had treated my body as a standard model that came out broken. It should have looked like everyone else’s, something went wrong in the making, and that was why it kept failing. Manage it better, I thought, and it would fall in line.

Nothing about my body changed that day. It is the same body. What changed was the blame.

How a man who drew blueprints ended up reading people

One thing I learned at a drafting table.

When a part will not fit, the hand goes one of two ways: the hand that shaves it down, and the hand that opens the drawing again. Beginners shave. It goes in for now, and the whole slips a little out of true. Anyone who has done it long enough opens the drawing first.

People turned out to be the same.

Sitting for thirty years where people tell you their lives, I watched them shave at each other. A husband shaved at a wife. A parent shaved at a child. Most of all, they shaved at themselves.

Shaving was never going to do it. It needed reading.

Why these two books

The two run in opposite directions.

Drawn First comes from the outside in. It starts with a pencil, walks through nature, the cosmos, and history, and arrives at last at you.

Built in Reverse starts inside. It begins with the body, learning, work, and love, and moves into your own grain.

Whichever way you come, you end up in the same place: was a line drawn first?

Why you can trust me on this

I will not answer with credentials. Here are three.

One. I listened for thirty years. I sat for a long time in the chair where people say what they say to no one else. Those thirty years are my data. Not statistics — data with faces on it.

Two. I was trained to handle structure. You cannot draw a single line without first knowing where this part meets that one. That eye kept working when I turned it on people. Why does this person always catch here is the same question as why does this component always catch here.

Three. I was the last to know my own. It took me sixty-six years to read the grain of my own body. So I do not say I am teaching this. I say someone who came the long way round is pointing out the road. Coming from a man who needed sixty-six years, “too late” is not a phrase I use easily.

Frequently asked

Where was that chair for thirty years?

I was a pastor in one church. This site is not a place where faith is urged, and it will not become one. But I am not going to hide where I did my looking.

Is the coaching therapy?

No. Therapy works on what hurts. What happens here is reading your grain and drawing the next line. If you are in real distress right now, see a professional first.

If I read my grain, does the problem go away?

Reading and drawing are two different jobs. Reading shows you how you got here. Drawing the next line is separate work, and it takes time. I am not going to pretend reading is all of it.

Why start this at your age?

Because I found out late. Had I known earlier I would have done something else. I think there are things only someone who came the long way round can say.
